Description
Organic Black-Plum Tomato Seeds
Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Black-Plum Tomato seeds take 78 days to reach maturity. Sweet, fruity and juicy, these little black plum tomatoes are favourites for sauce. They are also great in salads and for snacking right in the field. The indeterminate plants are just loaded with fruit, right up to frost. This heirloom was once the star of the Russian canning industry. Prolific and tasty.
Planting Instructions
Start tomatoes indoors 6-8 weeks before your frost-free date. Sow seed .5 cm deep and keep warm and moist. Seeds will germinate in 5-10 days at 21-24 C. Move seedlings into 10 cm pots and give them a rich mix with lots of compost, or use a good organic growing medium. Keep soil on the dry side. Harden plants off before planting outdoors by exposing to outdoor conditions a few hours at a time for 2-3 days. This will toughen them up for life in the garden or field. When transplanting seedlings into the garden bury the stem so that are only 2 sets of leaves showing above the soil surface. The plant will root all along the buried stem creating a strong root system and healthy plants. Indeterminate varieties are best staked or trellised. Determinate varieties do not need staking.
About Organic Seeds
What are organic seeds? An organic seed is an unaltered seed that comes from a purely raised plant with no genetic modification and that has not been affected by chemical applications or additives. Because organic growers are not permitted to use synthetic pesticides on their plants, the plants naturally become adapted to withstand pests and other natural enemies such as harsh weather. They have to, in order to defend themselves. When organic seed is used, the plants have that intrinsic strength. In other words, the flavour, colour, nutrition, and natural defenses are bred into the seed.
