Organic Aunt-Molly’s Ground-Cherry Seeds
Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Aunt-Molly’s Ground-Cherry seeds take 75 days to reach maturity. Sweet little bursts of fruitiness. These little yellow fruits are about the size of marbles. They can be eaten fresh or dried like raisins for winter use. Harvest fruits when the papery husk dries and turns light brown and the fruits turn from green to soft yellow. Great in chutney, jam or salsa.
Start ground cherries indoors 6-7 weeks before your frost free date. Sow seeds .3 cm deep and keep moist until germination occurs. Seeds are slow to germinate needing about 2 weeks more than tomatillos or tomatoes. Transplant plants 60-75 cm apart once soil warms up and allow plants to sprawl. Fruit ripens continuously until frost and drop to the ground when ripe. Mulch under plants helps keep fruit clean. Harvest regularly to encourage fruiting.
About Organic Seeds
What are organic seeds? An organic seed is an unaltered seed that comes from a purely raised plant with no genetic modification and that has not been affected by chemical applications or additives. Because organic growers are not permitted to use synthetic pesticides on their plants, the plants naturally become adapted to withstand pests and other natural enemies such as harsh weather. They have to, in order to defend themselves. When organic seed is used, the plants have that intrinsic strength. In other words, the flavour, colour, nutrition, and natural defenses are bred into the seed.
