Organic Endive Greens Seeds
Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Endive Greens seeds take 65 days to be ready for harvest. Often called frisee, this leafy green is considered by some to be a culinary treasure. This classic French frisee endive forms a heart of finely cut and frilly leaves. Unlike other greens it can withstand a hot oil dressing, or heat on the grill. Also, with a mildly bitter taste it can be cooked whole and makes great salads. Growers often bundle up the outer leaves to a point above the plant and hold it in place with an elastic. This cuts off sunlight to the centre rossette, creating an interior that is blanched and much sweeter and tender than the outer leaves. Easy to grow and delicious.
Planting Instructions
Direct seed in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. For baby leaf production sow seed .3 cm deep in 5-10 cm bands, approx. 30 seeds per 30 cm. For full size production sow .3 cm deep, 6 seeds per 30 cm and thin plants 10 cm apart in rows spaced 45 cm apart. Blanch hearts by tying with a thick elastic band or by placing a cardboard or plastic disc on top of the head for 3 days to exclude light. Cold hardy biennial.
