Organic Birdhouse/Bottle Gourd Seeds
Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Birdhouse/Bottle Gourd seeds have 125 days to maturity. This large gourd can be dried and used to make beautiful birdhouses or bottles. The hourglass shaped fruit reach 25 – 30 cm. and consist of two chambers connected by a narrow neck. The dried gourds were traditionally used to carry water. Gourd artists often use them to make figures such as snowmen as the shape is perfect for this.
Planting Instructions
Plant indoors 2-3 weeks before your last frost date or direct seed outdoors once the soil has warmed to 21 degrees Celsius. Sow seeds 2.5 cm deep. Sow 2-3 seeds 30 cm apart and thin to the strongest seedling. Space rows 2-3 m. apart Provide plants with lots of compost or organic fertilizer for strong healthy growth. To provide extra heat early in the season, cover the young plants with floating row cover until they start to flower then remove cloth so pollination can occur. To dry gourds leave in an unheated garage or porch over the winter and they will be ready to use in spring.
