Organic Cylindra Beet Seeds
Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Cylindra Beet seeds have 54 days to maturity. Elongated reddish/purple beets are easy to slice into uniform pieces for cooking or canning. A favourite of many chefs. Leafy tops can be cooked and make beautiful bunches for market. Cylindrical beets tend to push up out of the soil as they grow so cover the exposed shoulders with soil to keep them smooth. Has resistance to scab and cercospora.
Sow in early spring when soil has warmed slightly and hard frosts are almost over. Cool weather produces the best root colour. Sow 1.5 cm deep, 10 seeds per 30 cm. For baby greens leave spacing as is and for roots thin to 5-7 cm. Eat the thinnings. Greens can be harvested throughout the season and do well when lettuce is not very productive in the heat of summer. Beets can also be sown indoors 5-6 weeks before last frost and transplanted to the garden. Be careful not to disturb the roots when transplanting. Many gardeners prefer direct seeding.
