Description

Organic Northeaster Pole-Bean Seeds

Grown and harvested in Ontario, organic Northeaster Pole-Bean seeds are one of the earliest pole beans designed for the Canadian climate: 54 days to maturity. Vigorous vines produce an abundance of tasty, flat, stringless beans with bright green colour. Pods are 20 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Pick often and it will produce until frost. This is the best pole bean we have found for northern gardeners— reliable even in cool summers.

Planting Instructions

Direct seed beans into well drained soil in full sun once the soil has warmed above 16-21 degrees Celsius. Warmer is better. Sow 2.5 cm deep with the eye facing down and space plants 15 cm apart in rows or 5 seeds at the base of each pole. A good quality compost or organic fertilizer will increase production. Provide poles or twine and watch them climb. Pick frequently to encourage a continuous supply of beans. To harvest dry bean, allow pods to dry to a crisp and shell out the beans. They are dry enough to store when seed coats cannot be dented with your fingernail.

About Organic Seeds

What are organic seeds? An organic seed is an unaltered seed that comes from a purely raised plant with no genetic modification and that has not been affected by chemical applications or additives. Because organic growers are not permitted to use synthetic pesticides on their plants, the plants naturally become adapted to withstand pests and other natural enemies such as harsh weather. They have to, in order to defend themselves. When organic seed is used, the plants have that intrinsic strength. In other words, the flavour, colour, nutrition, and natural defenses are bred into the seed.
